Lt. Rebecca Esselstein – USAF

1st Lt. Rebecca Esselstein, U.S.A.F. is a graduate of Alter High School and the U.S. Air Force Acadmey where she studied Astronautical Engineering. She is a native of Washington Township and most recently completed her Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford in England as a Rhodes Scholar. In her spare time, Lt. Esselstein rowed for the Blue Boat at Oxford against Cambridge. She was CoSIDA Women’s Division I Track & Field Academic All-American of the Year in 2015. Her dream is to become an astronaut. Her next assignment is flight school in Texas.

Hannah’s Treasure Chest provides basic items for children in need. They are not a direct service organization. A partner such as a counselor or service agency finds people in need and requests to get the items from HTC. Just a few examples of items that can be obtained are clothing, shoes, underwear, diapers, and toys.

Presentation of Checks to Dayton Children’s from Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf Outing

Donations from CNO have helped fund the patient tower at DCH that opened on June 5, 2017. It has State of the Art technologies and conveniences. In the Dayton area there are 50 new patients each year with childhood cancer. Pediatric cancer is truly bad luck. It is not because of lifestyle, exercise levels or diet which are the causes of a lot of cancers in adults. Pediatric cancers can be cured about 85% of the time. About 42% of adults with cancer are cured. Treatment for pediatric cancer is the same across the U.S. through a nationwide network of doctors and protocols.

Pamela Jacques – Epilepsy Foundation

The New Epilepsy Foundation Ohio was just formed and represents all of Oho. They are trying to get the word out. One of the major issues with getting the word out is people (and their families) with the disease keep it a secret because a lot of the general population do not understand the disease. Quite a large number of people are afflicted with Epilepsy. More people live with Epilepsy than Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cerebral Palsy combined. You know someone with Epilepsy, but may not know that they have it.

Georgia Mergler – Sneak Peek – New Woodbourne Library

In 2016 the Woodbourne library was closed for renovation. The new expansion takes the size of the library from 21,000 sq. ft to 30,000 sq. ft, which is approximately the same size now as the Centerville library. She showed us pictures of tensile shade structures funded by CNO for the Children’s Garden. We also saw pictures of the two signature sunscreens on the sides of the building designed by Harry Botier that were restored to look how they did originally.

Chappy’s Social House – Matt Somerlot CHS Educator and Track Coach

This is Matt’s 23rd year coaching track. He values that his sport is a no cut sport at CHS and it is very much needed. Some kids need a chance to interact with other kids, some just need a gym credit, others need to meet a kids to have lunch with. In track there is almost always improvement the kids can see as their times get better sometimes day to day. Track kids learn to compete. He finds what the kids are good at. each kid gets to compete at least once a week.

The Will Cale Scholarship requires a Counselor’s recommendation and emphasis is on financial need and potential rather than academics or class standing. The scholarship provides up to $750 per semester for up to six semesters at Sinclair College, sufficient funding for an Associate’s Degree. This year’s winners are: Zoe Pirslin, Victoria Brinkman, Mya Wehde, Brittney Grant, and Allison Salyer.

United Way fights for the education, health, safety, and financial well being of everyone in our community. It started 104 years ago in 194. even though the economy is doing well in our area there are issues. They try to provide a hand up instead of just a hand out. They help support food pantries because of food insecurity. They try to find what factors are causing the food insecurity in an area or household.
